Chordoma in a Ferret

History: 2-year-old female ferret showing a mass at mid-tail. The mass surrounds the tail and is growing.

Cytological description: The smears show a background of mucinous pinkish material with multiple large pleomorphic physaliphorous cells found individually and in small clusters. These show a moderate to large amount of moderately basophilic foamy cytoplasm, one to two medium to large sized round nuclei with coarse granular chromatin, one to two medium-sized round to angular nucleoli, and moderate anisocytosis and anisokaryosis.

Comments: Chordoma are mostly seen at the tip of the tail. This tumor is potentially malignant although no metastasis has been seen in neoplasms arising in the tail.
