Histoplasmosis in a Cat

History: 2-year-old cat, domestic short hair, intact female, having a history of sneezing and unilateral purulent nasal discharge. No foreign body was found on rhinoscopy. Nasal swabs were submitted

Cytological description: The images show numerous macrophages, small and medium-sized lymphocytes, lymphoblasts, and neutrophils with scattered young spindle-shaped cells and epithelial cells. There are multiple round to oval structures, 2-5 microns in diameter, showing a pale blue cytoplasm and an eccentrically placed crescent-shaped purple nucleus. These are found between and within the macrophages. The structures' morphology is compatible with Histoplasma capsulatum.

Comments: Histoplasma organisms may be found in many organs. The lung, bone marrow, liver, spleen, and lymph nodes are most frequently affected.
