The Best Treatment For Feline Hyperthyroidism
I-131 is as easy as 1...2...3
1. Patient is diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and is not ill from concurrent disease
- If the patient is grey zone, perform a FT4 by ED Assess the patient’s renal function
2. Assess the patient’s renal function
- Perform a Tapazole trial until the patient is euthyroid (duration varies but usually 2-3 weeks)
- Once patient is euthyroid, recheck BUN, Creat, urine specific gravity and Total T4 (complete blood panel if other abnormalities were seen prior to Tapazole trial)
- If renal status is stable, it is OK to treat the patient
Patients with renal azotemia while hyperthyroid are generally not good candidtates for I-131 therapy (there can be exceptions if the patient cannot tolerate medical therapy). Have the client call VDIC to schedule an appointment

Please submit complete bloodwork and urine specific gravity performed within 2 months of scheduled treatment date.
